Summer Solstice

Introducing the new June seasonal cask

A new month, a new season, it must be time for our new Leeds Brewery seasonal ale. At the beginning of every month we launch one of our speciality cask ales that we think represents the time of year.

As the British summer is on its way, this June we are introducing Solstice, a light summer ale. The summer solstice marks the first day of summer. The date varies between 20th June and 22nd June depending on the year and which timezone you are in, making it the longest day of the year. This is to do with the positioning of the sun; as the earth travels around the sun in its orbit, the north to south position of the sun changes over the year due to the changing orientation of the earth’s tilted rotation axes.

The word solstice refers to a stopping or standing still of the of sun, meaning it's visible in the sky for a longer period of time, hence why we get longer to enjoy the sunshine.

The solstice is celebrated by many cultures across the world with feasts, picnics, dance and music; here in Britain the Stonehenge is believed to have been used as an important religious site 4,000 years ago, and has been a place of worship and celebration at the time of Summer Solstice for thousands of years. . If you stand at the right spot inside the Stonehenge monument on the day, facing northeast through the entrance towards a rough hewn stone outside the circle, you will see the sun rise above the Heel Stone.

We thought the name Solstice was perfectly fitting for our straw coloured summer beer as we intend for it to be enjoyed while out enjoying the sun. We have created a light, refreshing beer with a crisp, clean colour that we have flavoured with English hops to reflect the traditions of British summer time. At the low ABV of 3.5%, it produces a well balanced session beer that is hugely drinkable allowing you to come back for a second pint (maybe even a third!).

Our Solstice light summer ale is available at all of our pubs throughout June so keep an eye out for it on the bar. We hope it becomes your new favourite summer pint. LB
