May to-do List

Your what's on guide for this month

With two bank holidays on the calendar this month and a few big events to look forward to, we’re keeping you up to date with what’s on in May.

Go back to 1965

If you love a bit of soothing jazz and enjoy watching live music then we’ve got something that will get your feet tapping and your fingers clicking. The White Swan are hosting a two day jazz festival on Monday 9th and Tuesday 10th of May to celebrate 50 years of Leeds College of Music, showcasing the best young and exciting jazz projects coming out of the city’s music scene. With 40 bands playing from midday until 11.30pm over the two days, it’s definitely worth popping in to catch some of the talent while enjoying a pint of real ale.

Join the club

Every week in May we celebrate the nation’s favourite lunchtime essential; the sandwich. Whether it be hot or cold, white or brown, we all have a craving for a hearty sandwich. This year from the 9th-15th May, our Leeds Brewery pubs will be serving our specialty club sandwich: chicken, bacon, egg, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise. Our club sandwich will be available all week for £7 and if you choose to add a pint of any of our Leeds Brewery ales you can get both for £9.50.

We also have our usual sandwich menu available from 12pm-5pm with our pub favourites such as the Leeds Best battered fish finger sandwich, the classic BLT and our very own Hellfire ale cheddar and Midnight Bell chutney, served on granary, rustic farmhouse white, or gluten free bread.

Celebrate the local independents

After the success of the city’s first Indie Food Festival last year, it’s happening all over again this May with over 80 diverse vendors already signed up to be involved. The Leeds Indie Food Festival is a chance to celebrate independent food and drink of the local businesses, bars, restaurants and cafes. The festival begins on Thursday 12th May and takes places for over 2 weeks, finishing on bank holiday weekend, the 30th May.

As Leeds Brewery is an independent business, we are included in the festival, in particular the Holbeck Urban Village Tour. This involves a tour of half a dozen of the area’s big hitters, including drinks in our very own Midnight Bell pub. The tour begins outside the Round Foundry and tickets are £15, for more information visit the website.

Start summer the right way

Summer is coming and what better way to spend it outside in the sunshine with a beer in one hand and a burger in the other. The Lamb & Flag will be firing up their BBQ every Friday evening where head chef Andy will be serving deliciously fresh burgers and hotdogs from 4pm-8pm, a great accompaniment to post work drinks. A sample of the BBQ menu includes a pork and chilli hotdog, our Yorkshire Dales steak burger with tomato relish and cheese, and a chicken burger with relish and jalapeno mayonnaise. Prices range from £4.50 for our hotdogs to £6 for our burgers and all of our meat is locally sourced from The Yorkshire Dales Meat Company, our trusted suppliers since 2011.

he Lamb & Flag has one of our best beer gardens with a seated courtyard area and a terrace with a scenic view looking across to Leeds Minster, making it the perfect setting for a refreshing pint and a BBQ on a summer’s evening - we hope to see you there.

Enjoy a night at the theatre

As York Theatre Royal recently returns after a £6million redevelopment, it’s definitely worth a visit to see how it has changed and improved to be more suitable for a 21st century audience. The project has been funded by Arts Council England, City of York Council and York Conservation Trust which has allowed access through the building to be improved, added an open plan foyer and doubled the cafe seating area. The main stage has been reconstructed in a modular form, allowing it to be adapted or removed altogether, allowing more flexibility in performances.

There’s something for everyone at the theatre with lots of different shows and performances shown regularly, and while you’re in the city, pop in and see our Leeds Brewery family in York at the Eagle & Child or the Duke of York for a pre theatre meal or a post theatre pint. See their website for the full show listing.

Have a night off cooking

You are in for a midweek treat every Wednesday at Crowd of Favours with their burger club. Grab yourself one of their 5 gourmet burgers and a pint of any of our Leeds Brewery beers for just £10.95. All burgers are served with dressed salad leaves, hand cut Leeds Brewery chips, Leeds Best battered onion rings and homemade relish. The offer is available from 5-9pm, so if you fancy a night off cooking, then head to Harper Street for a good deal and a cracking burger.

These are just a few suggestions of things to keep you busy in both Leeds and York this month and what better way to enjoy all of them than with a pint of Leeds Brewery beer. LB
